Quick mention on the Boh Runga show this August 3rd at Largo. Boh is touring in support of her new US Debut album "Right Here." Here from New Zealand, I do not know when you will get a chance to see her again so I highly recommend this show. She is dynamic and well worth checking out.Play Evelyn Evelyn Download Evelyn Largo is located at 366 N La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles.
I often dream of open roads, discovering small, new towns and meeting the folk that make those places as unique as they are. In the country somewhere, away from everything I know, I envision walking into a saloon and hearing music that I would have never heard before. Their is a strange chemistry and female power to the music in these dreams of mine. I am sucked in and feel powerless as the music gets louder. As I get closer to the stage, I am surrounded by the mesmerizing vocals of this force. This band in my dreams actually exists already. Their name is Agent Ribbons.
Dark vaudevillian folk music is my new favorite type of music. Now mind you, that might sound like a weird concoction of genres, but when you are trying to describe a band that does not fit easily into a box(the type I really really like), you have to be creative. Agent Ribbons, the force that is this sweet sweet band from Sacramento is that sort of band.
Agent Ribbons were cool enough to send us a few tracks off their new ep. We are really behind the force that is this band and wanted to share them with you. They are also working on their album "Chateau Crone" which is due out in November of 2009.Play Bird In The Mirror Bird In The Mirror Download Bird In The Mirror Play Your Love is The Smallest Doll Your Love Is The Smallest Doll Download Your Love Is The Smallest Doll
Agent Ribbons is the sort of the band that comes along when you least expect it leaving you smiling and slightly disturbed at the same time. They don't fit into a boring, "critic's" self righteous box. Their music stands on its own relentless lyrical motion. It is deeply rooted in you with play after play. It is set to the folksy and whimsical stories that could only be sang by playful and so talented Natalie Ribbons. Agent Ribbons leaves you just wanting to be part of whatever madness they create. Pure delight is what comes mind when I think of this bad-ass threesome of girls that makes some of the most, fun, dark and oh so brilliant, three minute filled songs that leaves me just craving more.
They are making their way down the west coast on a mini tour and have upcoming shows in LA on August 4 at The Smell and August 6th at L'Keg. Trust me when I say they are not to be missed!
Show is Friday, July 31th @ The Echoplex. The Echoplex is located at 1154 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles.
Let me just get this out there to begin with. Straight to the point, I try to stay away from words like genius and empty filled compliments. But this album, "Turn it Loose" by Ill Ease is just ridiculous and a force that has me gushing all over when I listen to it. And yes, it is genius. Bred from the musical brain and rich tradition that is Elizabeth Sharp, all I can say is, Whoa! All the eclectic sounds that has had my stereo reverberating since I got the album has just got me shaking my head. In the middle of this crazy concoction of electro-infused sounds , it moves easily from really catchy hooks and back again to some bizarre sounding yet so stellar off tempo vocals (at times sounding like like dueling vocals). Ill Ease blows me away. Song after song is so dam original and resonates with me. With every song Ill Ease takes you on a different cosmic trip, or should I simply call it what it is; an orgasm of sound that massages you inside out and leaves you in your own world. Out of the bizarre creation that is Ill Ease, is one of the most original and solid albums I have heard in quite a while.Play Here Comes Trouble

Ill Ease takes you from lo fi garage to synth disco beats to folk and beyond. You will want to blast this album at 6 am as you are coming down from one of those nights you never wanted to end. If there was ever an album to show people your own madness and creativity through the music you play for others, Ill Ease is it. Give it a listen, or two or about 100 hundred like I have and you will be blown away by its sheer force. It will rattle you to the core and have you just wanting to Turn it Loose!
When you are in the presence of something great, you want more. Whether it be love, nature or music, it will consume you until you have had your fill.
As we have known for a while, one of our own, Robert Francis, has been working on his debut album for Atlantic Records. Thanks to the mysterious powers that got the message out on him, we were allowed to post a recently finalized song through the link below.
What we know about Robert Francis as we got to experience through an interview and a few live performances a while back, is that a talent like his is reborn with every performance. Every time you listen to him, you will connect with his music a little deeper. So enjoy this precious 3.27 minutes of sheer inspired Robert Francis poetry. We have all come to expect excellence from this truly talented performer and he delivers time and time again.
In an attempt to search for good quality free shows, I have happily stumbled upon Mynameisguy! Mynameisguy played a half hour show at Vroman's Bookstore outdoor stage as a part of Vroman's Summer outdoor music series in Pasadena. I had been listening to their four available songs on Myspace over and over prior to going to see them. By the time I was finally watching them perform I had memorized the ones I heard. They went onstage immediately after a book reading and I was super excited. There was a modest crowd, but it was also 4:30 P.M. on a very hot day so it was not too much of a surprise.
Mynameisguy plays mellowfied, jangley, indie music. I couldn't help but want to be taking a road trip listening to them. It made me feel good. It made me smile as I watched Guy Valdez smile as he sang. There is also a girl female singer in Mynameisguy. Her name is Jenny Luna and she gave me chills when she graced her voice in a couple of songs. I couldn't help thinking of Hope Sandoval for just a brief second. My favorite song of Mynameisguy is "Point At Stars." This is a beautiful number that will tug at your heartstrings. The guitar work in this song is perfectly matched with the tambourine in what is a dreamlike dance around Guy's beautiful lyrics.
Watching Mynameisguy perform took my mind off the heat (and the plastic chair that I was sure I was gonna break!). It was a pleasure to watch this wonderful band perform and I can't wait to see them again. If only they would play sometime soon and somewhere close...wait, they will be!!!! They will be performing on July 25th at a Laemmle Theatre's after hours event in Pasadena and guess what? It is totally free! It's a thrill to have such a great band representing Pasadena!
You know that feeling…when something just grabs a hold of you and won’t let go. This is how I feel about this band, Shannon and The Clams. It is unpretentious, raw and simply really good music.
This band is a vintage-flavored throwback to the power of an era of big hair, wild cars and ridiculously contagious music. Yet Shannon and The Clams keep it true, without trying too hard to be anything they are not. To the core, this is a band that will have you grabbing the nearest person at one of their live sets as you look to just shake whatever ails you lose and dance it away. Fun, is what this band is all about. I think it is great that this band is bringing their wild and tight garage rock sounds up the down the west coast throughout the month of July and August with a bunch of shows.
They have a show on July 16th at Mr. T’s with a wonderful lineup inducing Audacity, Pipsqeak, Thee Makeout Party and the Half Rats. This is one of those bands that should not be missed!
Isn't it great when the music just speaks for itself? Just sit back, forget the bios, the propaganda and just listen to Howlies. Howlies are a tight 4-Piece from Atlanta and will be making their way to the west coast. Their music is a rich blend of vintage rock, California surf and tantalizing richly flavored vocals and harmonies. Listening to them, I feel like I should just blow off everything, grab my friends and go cruising with the top down while blasting their tunes. Truly California Dreamin', Howlies will bring a contagious smile to your face.
Don't be one of the disspoainted music fans when you think back on how you could have been there to see this band. They have shows at The Redwood Bar on July 17th and The Echo on July 22nd before making their way up the coast. Do not miss them live.
Our buddies at Kill The Mic are helping out Radio Free Silverlake and New & Used Records for the first ever LA [heart] SF concert series. In what hopefully will be the beginning of some great collobos and band duels, the opening nights includes performances by:The Monolators (Los Angeles) French Miami (San Francisco) The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra (Los Angeles) Kissing Cousins (Los Angeles)
The first show is taking place in Los Angeles on Thursday, July 16th at The Echo. Doors open at 8:30 PM and the cover is only $5 (it goes straight to the bands that will be joining us for the evening). This is such a great cause, please come out and support it.
LA is rich. LA is plastic. LA is so many things that people cannot understand. But at the forefront of what it is, it is a magical city painted to a musical landscape that leaves so many people just simply envious. We are blessed to have a talent like Jordan Hudock, the incredible leader of Marvelous Toy. Part mad, all genius, his band's story continues to unfold and luckily, we get to participate in it through live shows and great music.
In a city that offers so much and takes so much from so many, listen to Marvelous Toy, and you are reminded what an amazing band Marvelous Toy is. The fact that they can move and inspire through their music, reminds me how lucky I am to live where I do. The music of Marvelous Toy belongs to everyone, because when you listen to it, you are reminded that you are in the presence of a truly gifted band. Their music will elevate you whether you are bumpin' it from your decks or during one of their ridiculously tight live shows. We are fired up that they sent this track they recently finished recording and we just had to share with all of you.
