Years ago I was in the presence of greatness. There I was in the back room at the Jazz Bakery, awe struck just waiting my turn to speak to the man. In front of me was Curtis Fuller, his humility, his trombone and his essence were moving. When I first got into jazz I kept seeing Curtis Fuller’s name come up in the liner notes. I sought out as much information on him as I could. To be around him was amazing. After his gig, I patiently waited and introduced myself. I simply thanked him for his playing over the years. I was excited, I think he could tell that I was being genuine, like a little kid! I was amazed that I could finally tell the man that it is because of him that I love “Brass!” He smiled at me and thanked me, called me young man. Wow. Curtis Fuller. What can I say, I still adore your music.
