The Counterparts have an album release on November 20th at The Dakota Lounge. Dakota Lounge is located at 1026 Wilshire, Santa Monica.

We recently received this neat little package in our in box. It was the EP by Wake Up Lucid, a trio of Mojave Desert transplants to Los Angeles. They were excited to let us know that their EP would be coming out shortly and we were definitely going to listen to it. We’ve known this band for a while because we wrote up one of their live shows a while back. And we never forget bands that leave us asking for more! But we had to give them a quick shout out because Wake Up Lucid’s EP is solid and sure to ignite a throng of loyal fans that will come up to see them tear up the stage wherever they decide to play. Their sets are inspired and so is their music.

With the trio bashing it up on stage with a guitar infused, rock and roll and blues infested energy, their music will leave you in haze that feels like you just got dropped kicked in the gut…and yes we actually love that feeling. Wake Up Lucid are cousins Ryan Baca(guitars/vocals), Ian Baca(bass) and drummer Jamie Baca.

Funny thing happened the other night in Hollywood. I was a kid again. Not cool enough to have seen truly one of the greatest and most influential bands when they were first hitting the scenes all those years back, life granted me a second chance this wonderful night.

Set to the raucous and beautiful music that is The Pixies, I watched and listened to them tear up the Palladium stage as I had so many other bands in my youth at this very same spot. But never The Pixies. To be here on this night,  way older made me appreciate life’s journey and how so often, we think we do not get what we deserve or work towards. Yet nearly twenty years after the fact, here I was, feeling like a kid listening to one of my favorite bands and just soaking it all in. Not as an older person, but through the simplicity and eyes of a man feeling way younger then he had in a long, long time. The beauty of listening to The Pixies live made me feel like I did all those years ago when friends and I would sneak out to Hollywood and see all types of shows. The rush was back and this night it was set to The Pixies!

Life, like music, is all about reliving what makes us happy. And listening to The Pixies do a set to a sold out crowd in Los Angeles, consisting of “Doolittle” and lesser known b-sides, inspired me to reflect on my own life. Surrounded by a crowd of enthusiasts, there was something surreal for many of us. But ultimately, the sense I picked up from the crowd, was that this night was an opportunity for so many of us to finally experience something we had never before.

We all change, we grow. We get a bit slower, we wage our struggles and hopefully we are triumphant in our return to happier times. The Pixies, all their drama behind them and themselves humbler and changed for the better, reached out to an audience on the first night of their tour that touched so many of us. Funny thing, life. Just when you think you are not getting what you need, you get what you wanted and desired for so long. The wait and the people that come along for it were way better then anything you could have had before this experience!

Reflections of all the time past from the first Pixies show I missed to present time, made me appreciate all the travels and experiences I have had in my life. People have come and gone. Changing cities have been my canvases were I have created my own life. Yet one constant is the awe-inspiring power that music has always played in my life. And that power was evident on this night when The Pixies made me, and so many others in the audience, reminisce on a time past, and made us all smile for the journey it took to get us, like them, to this moment where we could all be enveloped in the love and energy that only The Pixies could have brought. The sheer joy at hearing this band will stay with me; even it is another twenty years until I see them again!

Remember discovering velcro as a child? You were so fascinated by it, you simply could not get enough and the next thing you knew, you were looking for any opportunity to play with it. I feel the same about the deliriously guilty laden pop gems created by the one and only Netherfriends.

Pop. It can blow so many times. Unless it inspires you to put your own biases aside and get you to that happy place where you can just play it for all your friends. After all, you just need to be yourself, nothing else matters. Never was this truer then when listening to the inspired and crazily arranged concoctions that is Netherfreinds. We are very thankful to our friends at Daffodil for sending along this gem our way. And while the creative force that is Netherfriends has been gaining a lot of fans since 2007, the new stuff is sticky and wont leave you alone until you have played it a few hundred times!   Netherfriends has that catchy pop thing laced to some freakishly modest mouse sounding undertones that takes you on a radiant musical trip every time you listen to it.

Warning. Listening to The Black Apples is good for your health. Doctor’s and old people tell you eating apples daily is good for your health. Listening to The Black Apples trumps that. They will drop kick you in the mouth and leave your ears pulsating  and feeling liberated. With a sweet loud 60’s psycho sense to keys, powerful guitars and rock n’ roll vibe that  oozes long nights, benders, chicks and a we don’t care attitude, this band will annihilate your speakers and get deep into you! After listening to the them, you will simply have two choices- to either walk away or listen to them even more loudly. We choose to listen to these kids when we are just wanting to kick start our day. The Black Apples, LA’s  raw, masters of garage psychedelic rock are a band whose sounds are relentless. Their music leaves you overcome by a power similar to what people experience during a Pentecostal rebirth; you know where they start shaking, feeling so jacked up, running around  because they don’t know what to do with all their new found energy. The band will have you so amped up you’ll never want to come down as if possessed yourself!
