Got a whiff of this band a while back. At that time I had heard just enough to capture my imagination. And like an eager kid awaiting something in the mail that you had sent away for, I have been waiting for the album to magically show up. And it finally has. Yeah! And dam, it is just what I needed to hear. It reinvigorated me with a much needed infusion of something refreshing, new and great. What is there to say other then this. The Dig will be dug by many many people in the upcoming months.

Play Already Gone

Download

Forget the catchy one liners that make a critic’s day. This band is not condensed into a sound bite or a cliche one liner. It just needs to be let loose, allowed to continue to inspire the crowds of people piling outside clubs on chilly nights just for an opportunity to see them live. The Dig are a band that is lighting up the scene in New York City. This time, in The Dig we have another band that is delivering inspired rock anthems that need to be heard by the masses.

The Dig’s forthcoming album Electric Toys is out on April 27. The Dig are on tour with Portgual The Man and Port O’Brien. This New York band is currently out on the road! Tour Dates:

By: Meggan Carney

It just so happens I was informally invited to the Red Hot and Soul gala at the Austin Convention Center. It was a 4 ½ hour ordeal that was supposed to raise 20 thou or more for Zach Scott Theatre. I freaking love Zach from inside out, bee hives and all, so I figured it would bee for a good cause if I tagged along with fellow comrades. An added bonus: I heard there would be some musical entertainment. Rumor also had it that several paid close to $500 for a voucher… holy hell! The least I could do was wear heels. I was a guest thus I waltzed on in at no cost; however a small fare was in order: to be placed at large, round dinner tables submerged in upper class snobbery while pretending to listen to the drone of aristocratic jabber. Start from the left and work your way in!! Not necessarily my scene. I spent most of the time nodding and uh-huh-ing as I sipped my (free) red wine and poked my oversized silver fork into a perfectly crisp, green garden salad. No complaints.

There in the midst of philanthropy at its finest, I recall only a small time frame when I wasn’t aware that everyone around me owned five or more yachts. I’m talking about the 20 minute time frame when the theatrical percussion group DrumJam fell into my life. If Blue Man Group and Stomp made sweet love while Trans-Siberian Orchestra played in the background, later pushed 5 eggs which were then injected with radioactive current, DrumJam would be their hatchlings.

Once they took the stage everyone, for richer or for poorer, would forget about their credit score, trash their good postures and dive right into dance. The energy these guys threw at us was unbelievable. All five were obviously drummers though each took on additional roles. Chris came off as the head of the assembly with lots of passion and liveliness. He bounded all over the stage knocking the hell out of the original, handmade objects that produced an enormous amount of sound. Mike rocked keys, Keytar (I know, right? A keytar!) and percussion. Ryan seemed to stay pretty busy in the back as the musical robo-synth player with some drumming in between. Placed in dead center towards the back of the stage sat Dylan on kit, who was much to my pleasant surprise a complete replica of Animal from The Muppet Show. ANI-MAL! ANI-MAL! God bless the Jim Henson. Zach, whipping long, blonde locks back and forth, gave Chris a break as the leader now and then, while doing the band plenty of justice as their lead guitarist. Epic solos infiltrated the room as the monstrous volume pumped into the noble patrons ear tunnels. And if you couldn’t hear the rhythm, you could certainly feel it.

It was electrifying, yet organic. And SOOO Austin. With show-stopping magic tricks, an unforgettable light show, and a whole lotta grooving, this talented five-some has severely taken music to a new level. Among the elements I loved best was the positive oomph DrumJam possessed. They are definitely a “fun for the whole family.. with swagga” type of gang. In short, I was simply blown away. Thanks, DrumJam.

Energy. Creates energy. As people are drawn to each other, so are plants that bask in a photosynthetic buzz that attract each other and help it grow near other plants. At times even pushing themselves out of concrete. So are schools of dolphins swimming in the ocean during the warm months. Their numbers increase as they enjoy the new found warmth. As paints mold to a canvas and negatives come to life in a dark room, so does a tree’s fallen bark that rejuvenates the earth. There are forces that connect to other forces, thus becoming another force. Through attraction and absorption, whether human or not, we cannot deny the energy cycles that are created. Even karma cycles offer enriched rebirth through a lifetime’s worth of energy being created into new life forms that spawn new creations.

German astronomers have been poking around the notion of Type 1a supernovas. A type 1a supernova is wonderfully created in a magical light show far away in the universe when a white dwarf, the remnant of an older star, accumulates sufficient mass to become unstable and explodes. But until very recently, the origin of that accumulated mass was befuddling some really smart people around the world. Until they figured out that in some galaxies, supernovae are created by collisions. On and on went the discussions until they decided that the white dwarfs sucks in the mass from a companion star until it reaches the mass about 1.4 times that of the sun, at which point it explodes. Yet there is life and creation that comes out of this phenomena. That cannot be denied. A brighter light is created.

Our lives, the music we play, the people we share ourselves with are uniquely personal spheres and sharing them is a quite a challenge. It does not need to be. We should not separate ourselves, but be allowed to come into new eventual paths like that of the shredding stars the German scientists talked about. I think this week we should all embrace our tendency to collide and open ourselves up to the new energetic forces it generates when we share what we are creating with others!

Triumphant. That is the word that comes to mind when I think about this dude’s music. An integral part of the Los Angeles music scene, Andy Clockwise

has emailed us about his new EP. The music. Well, simply its powerfully crafted and reminds me what it would be like if I listened to “Chariots of Fire” while on Crack. Yep, I said it. It just amps me up. Then it takes me up another notch! Again and again. The music creations this guy makes are genre-bending, as if his creative juices were put into a blender, set to overdrive while frying the ax that chops everything up. What you get with Andy Clockwise is a talented musician that is worlds apart when he creates his unique pulsating mix of poppy hits. Others must be jealous. But we’re just happy we get to spread the dude’s message.

Her music makes me want to rip off my clothes and run through the fields naked as the earth’s beauty and wind consumes me as I hearken back to the day’s of a freedom long lost. While you might not want to do that, I would however suggest you do not miss her upcoming shows. It will be something you will be talking about for a long long time and surely warm your dreary east coast winter nights. Upcoming tour dates:

It’s winter and almost everyone I know would rather lose their left foot than go out and brave the cold weather. But if you’re the sort of person that needs a reminder of warmer days are on their way, then Singing Bridges is right up your alley. Their EP Three Trains is filled with catchy, peppy noise-rock tunes (like the tambourine-heavy “Crazy Street” or “Edith Keeler”). Hell, they even have a track called, “Sunny Day.” Singing Bridges is the kind of music I have a special place in my heart for, but definitely can’t listen to right now. It’s just not for the dead of winter. But don’t get me wrong, this will be the first thing on my iPod come June!
