Saturday night at Mr. T’s in Highland Park was pretty coooool. For five bucks I got to see Blue Jungle! I have been hearing many wonderful words about this band and I’m so glad that they lived up to the hype. Mr. T’s is never very packed, but Saturday was the most packed I had seen it in quite sometime, nevertheless, it was still a very intimate show.
Taking one look at Blue Jungle reminded me of a band that just stepped out of The Factory. This band is very stylish ( as is expected of their genre). Two girls have the mics: Lately Blu Blu and Paley King. These ladies command your attention with their sultry croons and legs like no tomorrow! Blu Blu flayed around the dancefloor during their performance getting up close and personal with the crowd. I personally back away when singers do that ’cause it makes me feel awkward and embarrasses me so much, but the rest of the crowd totally dug it and who could blame them? Blu Blu is a very engaging frontwoman and you want to be near her!
Blue Jungle’s music is full on post-punk and they nail the sound perfectly. I see this label for them quite fitting since post-punk is such a broad umbrella and they have a broad spectrum that they are capable of. They opened their set with “Oh, Suicide.” It’s a gloomy song that opens with the ladies chiming in their own special gloomy way that grips you by your heartstrings. The boys of the band are equally cool and brooding. The set was short, but the songs were sweet. They mentioned to the audience that they have sounded better, but they sounded just fine to me, but of course I’m not a music expert or anything.
If you are interested in getting a chance to check out a pretty-close-to-authentic post-punk band right here in L.A., go check out Blue Jungle. They will be in Echo Park at L’Keg on June 28th spreading the gloom.
