Ninjasonik @ El Rincon

About 6 months ago I saw this same line-up in the basement of a condemned bodega in Brooklyn. After that show the venue was shut down by the fire marshal. Both bands have gotten a lot of press since then,  so needless to say my expectations for their show this last Friday at El Rincon were pretty high.  Japanther delivered as usual, but the real spotlight was on Brooklyn based crunk-punk trio Ninjasonik.  It may be hard to tell whether you’re at a rap show, a dance club or a punk show, but you’ll at least know you’re at the craziest party in town.  Ninjasonik is comprised of Jah “Rev McFly” Jah (the punk), Telli Gramz (the rapper), and Teenwolf (the DJ).  As soon as their set started everyone left their self-awareness at the door and proceeded to dance to infectious electro base-driven beats like it was their job. Getting a room full of hipsters to dance is a feat in itself, so I was already impressed.

When the beat dropped the dance floor instantly turned into a dirty hot revelry of sweaty bodies grinding against each other under a giant cloud of smoke while everyone in the room repeated “Somebody’s gonna get pregnant!”  The way all three of them work the crowd not moving your body is almost impossible.  Just when you thought you were it was a dance party the same mob broke out into a mosh pit during the ninjas’ surprise cover of Bad Brains’ “Bad Attitude.”

It’s rare that you see booty-dropping, crowd surfing and a mosh-pit all happen at the same time.  If they come to your area I definitely suggest you check it out for yourself, though you might do something you’ll regret. I’m still hungover but boy was it worth!
