Expectations can be tough to match. Leave the past in the past. Let the new expression breath freely. Accept the wonderful gifts you will receive and let them guide you where they will. That is never truer then when one of the artist’s you follow closely and appreciate releases new music. I often think back to great singers/songwriters of generation’s past. And I wonder about the impact Langhorne Slim would have had in those previous eras? Where would he have ranked or compared with some of the greats? Then I realize it just does not matter. For we are in the presence with his new album, as with his previous work, of a musician that gives us all so much, we have to give it to others. His work is beyond comparisons and stands on its own. His music and its contribution will be here, long after many of us are not.
The music on his new album “Be Set Free” continues the tradition of impeccable sounds and lyrics that we have come to a expect from this wonderful artist. The music, the performances, and other overall uplifting power of his lyrics trounces whatever came before. A musician on a mission, Langhorne catches us up on his life with surrendering, honest glimpses through his personal song writing that lets us believe in something greater then ourselves. His is a powerful, candid, storyteller’s art that opens us up to a touching, deeply personal world. When I think about the greats, whether in times past or in the very present, I definitely have to put his music on the top of any list. For if you are about great music, his music belongs with the greats.

At some point in my life, where my own legacy will be discussed, through the contributions I made to the lives of others, I want it set to a soundtrack narrated by the music of Langhorne. On the song “For A little While,” Langhorne sings about having a cast spell over him. But when listening to this new album, it is we who are are the ones left in a wonderful, out of this world-spellbound feeling. His music belongs to all of us and for all of us to share.
To say, that I fall in love with his music more deeply every time I hear it, is all I want to say about Langhorne Slim along with this- Music, like wine, needs to be opened and allowed to breath. You must let it sit and resonate, so it finds its boldness and texture, color and inspires you. Ultimately, great wine, like great music takes you where it wants, not where you want it! You have to be open to its richness and accept it. There is nothing else needed, but to just enjoy it. The same is so true about the music of Langhorne Slim.
