New York Rifles @ Bordello

What do you get when you mix a writer that has been lacking inspiration, a rainy night in downtown, a shout out to Jesus Christ and a 50 minute set that just grabs a hold of you that you cannot stop yourself from smiling? You get the New York Rifles banging me out my creative malaise and me just thinking, amen, was that sweet!

This Portland band, the New York Rifles, shows up to our beloved and sunny LA, brings the rain with them to LA and took a part of my soul after their power set at Bordello the other night. And I am so glad they did. The New York Rifles bring unbelievable energy and pulsating-make-you-smile-music for what seemed to me to be one of the best sets of any band I have seen in quite a while.

There was a small audience at Bordello but it is as if we all felt cool to be here listening to this gem of a band, as they were passing through LA. The New York Rifles, all four skinny rockers, with a power set of bass, drums, and two guitars that could have woken up even the dullest of people. These guys are amazing live and it left me wondering, where the fuck is everyone and why aren’t more people catching this bands juggernaut sound?

As their set continued, it is as if the band could have played for another two hours or something silly like that. When I say The New York Rifles crushed their set, I mean, they beat it silly, they trumped on it, they spit on and they took no prisoners. Kinda of like Rocky did in the cooler scene in the movie, leaving people at a loss to explain what they had just seen. The New York Rifles don’t waste time, they just go for your soul and stump all over it with an adrenaline based set that makes you wonder, how long before they give it back to me.

This four piece consists of Scott Young, Sean Moultrie, Kari Schafer, Brent Williams who are some of the tightest musicians I have ever seen. Live, The New York Rifles are a band that hits such a thunderous crescendo, its exactly like 4 people all peaking at the same time. Unreal! The York Rifles are on tour right now promoting “Make a Wish” their new album. I was part of something really special that night. Be on the lookout for The New York Rifles coming to your town and don’t miss them, unless you want be like those people that like missing great bands when they come to your city.

The Polyamorous Affair @ Bordello

October 24th, 2008

It has got to be special to drag me out to the east side of Downtown. Really special. Downtown is a mystery to me even after all these years.  Downtown on a random Thursday evening? Yet there I was last night, determined not to miss The Polyamorous Affair at Bordello. Like A fool, I got there an hour  early before the first band even went on and sat myself at the bar, sipping Whiskey just to make sure I would not miss them. Again. Just a few words on what I experienced last night.

Simply put, the duo known as The Polyamorous Affair is a band on a mission. It is as if they are determined to achieve a past success but with a deeper appreciation for what it will feel like this time. Driven in the background by dueling dj’s lacing the beat that would move an AARP convention, The Polyamorous Affair is trying to build a sound, a movement all its own. Driven by an organic approach to music that lets them create, produce, and deliver their own, unique brand of pop-infused, pulsating dance music, the duo, headed by Eddie and Sissy are cultivating a sound that moves people to actually put their drinks down and dance. They stand behind their music, asking people to come along with them for a little part of their night as they take you on a music journey that just makes you feel good.

As I sat there listening to The Polyamorous Affair last night, I envisioned an LA Band that will need to leave us for a bit as they take their sounds and mission to other cities across the US. If a movement, one that brings more and more people into its grasp is too survive and flourish, then The Polyamorous Affair is on its way to attracting loyal followers to its cause. A cause that is evident by a band that goes into another zone as they perform, in a trance like state of fun, energetic, and tight music that leaves you wanting more, and more.

I am now glad I had missed their last few shows in Los Angeles. Listening to The Polyamorous Affair last night made me appreciate them even more, made me forget all that was on my mind, and even made me forget I was in Downtown by myself. Good music does that. It can be a beautiful escape that opens you open to new things, people and emotion. I got all of that last night listening to them. Music has got to do that, make us escape into a realm previously unknown to us and The Polyamorous Affair succeeds in helping us along the way by showing us something new and vibrant. After all, that is all I really want from music and last night The Polyamorous Affair delivered, turning me into an even bigger fan. Stay tuned because they have upcoming shows and we will let you know via Loudvine.com. Go out and see them, feel what I did last night, a positive force, The Polyamorous Affair.

Solar System @ Bordello

Speechless. Really, what can you say about a three piece ensemble with a collection of instruments that would make any kid proud? And did I mention, one guy wears an old TV on his head as he performs in a experimental haze of expansive sounds? Yep, another night in Los Angeles, listening to the bands that are truly doing their own thing. This is Solar System doing it their own way. I do not even know where to start so I will let you decide.

LA Weekly Detour Festival

October 5th, 2008

Wow:

I could not sleep last night. From the feeling that I was 17 again and wanting to be on top of the most pit @ the Gogol Bordello set, to listening to the powerful sounds of the trio Grand Ole Party, to watching the incredible Bitter:Sweet just a few feet away to listening and watching tons of flying toilet paper during the Black Lips set, this is all I will say. Wow. I love this city and am grateful to ALL the bands I was able to see yesterday at the Detour Festival in Downtown Los Angeles.

Black Lips:

Gogol Bordello:

The power of these bands sets made me want to rush to some “legal” file sharing site and get as much of their tunes as I possibly could. Every band brought energy and a set that deserved to be heard in their entirety. Problem was I felt like a kid again, when at Christmas, you get so many presents, you rip into one and move unto another. I wish I could have been at all four stages simultaneously and trust me I tried my best, but that was just impossible. I got as much VID as I could before my camera died and my arm went numb from holding it up for nearly 6 hours of “filming” for you guys.
