Bleu Bird and Astronautalis @ Knitting Factory

April 21st, 2009

astroandbleu

I’ve stood around at a lot of concerts and waited. Waited for the bands to get on stage, waited for the artists to sound check and sometimes (God forbid) even waited in line. Sometimes it can be fun watching your favorite artist’s set-up their show. Read the rest of this entry »

The Phenomenauts

April 4th, 2009

img_0265

I love rockabilly. There aren’t more fun shows to go to from seeing the pomped and creeper wearing crowd to the all out chaos of the pit. And if there’s one rockabilly band you see in all your life, make it the Phenomenauts. The band first came out all wearing the same uniform looking like they just got back from a space mission in another galaxy. Their completely eccentric appearance didn’t begin to make sense until they began a countdown that initiated an explosion of fog and confetti that engulfed the crowed as they launched into a rocking version of The Year 2000.

Immediately the crowd got excited, especially the band’s hardcore fans, also known as cadets, who came dressed like the band and knew the words to every song. After getting tossed around in the pit for a little while, I joined in on a chorus of “Earth is the best” led by the Phenomenauts‘ singer at which point the keyboardist brought out a huge Earth balloon and tossed it over the crowd. At the end of a solid set, they finally ended with “Science and Honor” that rocked so hard I swear I felt the floor shaking. Then, in true Phenomenauts space rocker style, they ended transmission, saluted the crowd, and left the stage. All I can say is, I can’t wait until they come back to LA because I’ve rarely seen a better show.

Castledoor @ The Echo

March 14th, 2009

castledoor

If you were to eat a tray of cupcakes covered in rainbow sprinkles and Prozac-laced vanilla frosting, you still wouldn’t be as happy and energetic as Castledoor. Last night at the Echo, this new wavey, synthy, bubble-gum pop-indie band got everyone dancing. Over the course of their 40 minute set, they were distilled clap-your-hands-then-wave-them-in-the-air-like-you-just-don’t-care. It was ultra soppy, but a really good time too.

First of all, I have to get one really important fact out of the way. Lead Singer Nate Cole was really, really hot. He had Brad Pitt good looks and mad singing skills. We was also one of the most animated indie singers I’ve seen around town (aren’t they supposed to be all ice-cool and ironic?). And I’m sure Cole has more than a few groupies. One girl in the crowd was so enthusiastic, she was practically doing interpretive dances to all of the songs. Some girls were even yelling at Cole to, “TAKE IT OFF!!!!! WOO!!!”

Groupies and good looks aside, the music was especially fun. Liska Cole and Coury Jane Combs looked like authentic Electro-Girls on dueling keyboards and synths (that is, when Liska Cole wasn’t on her twinkly xylephone). Drummer Joel Plotnik and bassist Brandon Schwartzel added gypsy-wedding-rhythms to the music. It was so fitting that the entire set was bathed in bubble-gum pink stage lights. Nate Cole sang songs about burning maps and placing pennies on train tracks. But just when I thought the ultra-saccharine sounds were verging on too commercial, Cole introduced the last song: “To all the record execs out there… Fuck you all!!!! Yeah!” Castledoor were completely sincere towards their indie fans.

If you’re looking for drone, doom, or wallow music, Castledoor isn’t it. They’re the sort of band you sing along to at the top of your lungs when you’re drunk with your friends. They songs pick you up as a guilty pleasure because they’re just so damn catchy. But hey, cupcakes are fattening and Prozac has all those weird side-effects. I’ll choose Castledoor any day.

Myka 9 @ The Knitting Factory

March 5th, 2009

sdc10988

Last night I went to go see a legend! Who is this legend I speak of? None other than LA’s own Myka 9. Myka played Knitting factroy and was joined onstage with JTheSarge spinning and spitting with him. Last night Myka 9 was promoting two projects…the man is busy! He was promoting his new record “1969″ and his Magic Heart Genies’ project that he worked on with JTheSarge called “Heartifact.” He opened for his long time friend, Aceyalone! It was definitely an old school night, but they sounded as young as ever, not that they are that old or anything!

Now, I don’t frequent underground hip-hop shows very often, but I felt at home in the crowd. Hip-hop crowds seem to be a little nicer than some indie-band crowds, maybe that was on the account of a certain illegal substance that filled the air? Or maybe because hip-hop is hellah fun! I was feeling everyone’s energy. I walked in while Icon was performing (right before Myka 9) and I was immediately smitten with the scene, even though I was totally called out by Icon…he asked people who had backpacks on to put them to take them off and put them to the side and dance, I think I was the only one with a backpack that I noticed, but I just came from school! Another thing that is so radical about hip-hop shows is that they don’t take forever and a year to set up. They are on it and ready to go. Ready to get in our faces and tell it like it is in their world. Myka 9 was literally onstage 3-5 minutes after Icon was done performing. He kept the energy going…smart!

“1969″ is Myka 9′s fifth solo album outside of Freestyle Fellowship, Haiku D’Etat, and Magic Heart Genies. Like I said, the man is busy. His new music, both solo and collaborative, last night was killing. He rhymes so freakin’ fast, I couldn’t believe it! A couple of times a song would come up that JTheSarge had in line and Myka would say he wasn’t prepared for that particular song, but he would do it anyway and kill the fuck out of it! Like he said “My beats are bumpin’ like braille.” Haha! I love it. In the background he projected some old footage of himself back in the day rapping and he looks the same except for the fact that he has longer hair now. He gets better with age in all areas! Ok, well his touring schedule lists his next show in Texas playing SXSW and nothing lined up after that, but I’m sure he’ll be around Los Angeles promoting “1969″ and his Magic Heart Genies project “Heartifact.” Both projects are super tight. Go pick up your copies!
